But also because governments do things like someone in charge of the National Weather Service who is the CEO of a for-profit weather company.

Which is exactly what happened in 2017, when the Trump administration put Barry Myers, the CEO of AccuWeather, as head of the National Weather Service.

Conflict of interest? You bet. If you're not an AccuWeather subscriber, not a paying customer, then someone like Myers is disincentivized from giving you the best and fastest predictions through the free National Weather Service. Not getting the info through his weather app? Then you might not get the best advance warning about that tornado on it's way to tear through your town.

Mind-blowing.
