My family of five owns two vehicles, a (relatively) fuel-efficient 2018 Subaru and an old pickup truck. We, too, live in a rural area (it gets very cold and wintry here) and both vehicles serve our needs.

Our consideration for buying a full EV or hybrid factors in the supply chain just to produce such new vehicles, the cobalt problem included, as well as the logistics of owning an EV or hybrid in a rural area (charging stations, repairs, problems with the cold, etc). Essentially, for now, our decision is that we have two reliable vehicles that have already been produced, and we'll stick with those for the foreseeable future.
