I do subscribe to conscious automata, but believe with moral responsibility. Even if cause is not “free,” we are all responsible; the buck has to stop somewhere. But I think we can deal with criminal behavior both without impugning character and without sacrificing public welfare.

Sam Harris and Anil Seth have a great in-depth conversation on the “hard problem” of consciousness on Harris’s Making Sense podcast. I’m not a neuroscientist, just an “armchair expert,” and while I do think consciousness is generated by the brain, I’m also open to the idea that consciousness transcends the brain, and the brain acts as a sort of prism, catching light.
