Your question is really part of the larger topic I continue to write about — how important ideas are often not commercial in an attention economy. To quote Chris Hayes of MSNBC, “climate change is a ratings killer.” Sadly so are so many other important topics.
To be fair, though, it’s not just the fault of infotainment or retail politics, though these are a big part. Philosophy and other esoteric subjects have always had a smaller audience.
I have other writing that I do (mysteries; crime thrillers) that pay my bills. I never wanted to have to write a Medium article every day to make money at it, and it seems that’s what one has to do.
I’d rather write about things when I have time, and about ideas and issues that age well, rather than ephemera. And I’d rather have 150 readers interested in complexity and nuance than 150000 just looking to get their bias confirmed.
